The History of Ocean County
With Pine Barrens and a 45-mile long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, Ocean County is the second largest county in New Jersey and has a rich history. In 1850, the county was comprised of several townships, including Stafford, Jackson, Brick, Toms River, Union and Plumsted. The Lenni Lanape Indians were the county’s first inhabitants and migrated from Delaware to enjoy the bountiful food supply and sea. Toward the end of the 17th century, whalers began to inhabit the area, and settlement began. These whalers were the fathers of the privateers during the American Revolution battles in Ocean County. During the American Revolution, Ocean County endured many British naval attacks. The village of Toms River was destroyed, and many defending militiamen were captured. After the American Revolution, grist mills cropped up along the rivers and streams adding to the area’s industry. Boat building and commercial fishing were the primary industries at this time. More about the county’s history can be found at the Ocean County governmental website.
